Our Story
The Italian settlers did not receive the warm welcome they’d expected. Instead, they were mocked at work or at school for how they dressed and spoke. They worked long hours for meager wages in dangerous sweatshops. It was a difficult life, but they were up for the challenge. And, through perseverance and strong community values, they became leaders in their new homeland.
The new Italian-Americans worked hard to provide an education for their children. The new generation would become doctors, lawyers, engineers, artists, chefs, musicians, and artisans. They took great pride in their New Haven community, always looking to make life better for themselves and anyone willing to put in the work. Driven by faith, a love of family, and a tireless work ethic, these immigrants made their American dream a reality.
These settlers struggled to pave the way for their families and so many others who came after. For that and much more, they deserve our enduring recognition, appreciation, and respect.
When completed, the Wooster Square memorial will be a place where area students can learn the history of immigration. It will also serve as a place of reflection, where visitors may honor their own family’s immigrant story.
No small task.
